Today, I’ll be talking about one book series that I love, the Hunger Games. The trilogy of books, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, were released in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Hunger Games has been extremely popular, it has been #1 New York Times Bestseller, #1 USA Today Bestseller, and #1 Wallstreet Journal Bestseller and it has sold over 65 million copies of the trilogy worldwide. The trilogy has now been made into movies in a four movie series with Mockingjay being made into two parts, the second part is yet to come to theatres. The movies star Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne.
My Thoughts:
I really love this whole series! The characters are interesting, the plot is great and the idea is so thought provoking. I think its well worth the read, a sure 4 ½ stars. It’s great for a YA audience, there’s too much violence and the idea is too gruesome for anyone under 12 in my opinion though it is also a great read for adults. It has lots of action, suspense and adventure as well as some romance for those who enjoy that. The story would be a great read for boys or girls.
Beware of spoilers ahead…

The series is about Katniss Everdeen, a teenage girl who lives in Panem, a country situated where the United States are now distantly in the future. Every year, the Capitol, the capital city of Panem, hosts the Hunger Games where each of the twelve districts must send one male and one female tribute between the ages of twelve and eighteen into the Games. In the Hunger Games, the tributes had to kill each other so that the last person alive would win the Games.
In the first book, Katniss in entered into the Hunger Games when she volunteers for her younger sister. Katniss and her fellow District Twelve tribute, Peeta engage in a romance which helps them get more gifts from sponsors. In the end of the book, they threaten to both kill themselves so that there would be no victor if the Capitol did not let them both live and the Head Gamemaker let them both live.
In the second book, with a surprise twist, Katniss and Peeta are sent back into the Hunger Games when the Quarter Quell chooses victors from previous Hunger Games to return and once again fight in the Hunger Games. They find many allies such as Finnick Odair, Beetee Latier and Johanna Mason. Their allies secretly worked on a plan they had made to help with a revolution against the Capitol that the Districts had started. The plan works and a plane flies in and saves some of the tributes including Katniss, Finnick and Beetee but the Capitol manages to fly in and grab some other tributes such as Peeta and Johanna.
In the final book, Katniss and the other rebels are situated in District 13 that was supposedly destroyed in the war when the Hunger Games started. The people living there moved underground and they let the others who were part of the rebellion stay there. They go on a rescue mission to save Peeta and Joanna and the others and succeed but Peeta had his brain tampered with and his feelings for Katniss were replaced with feelings of hatred. They manage to regain a relationship but it’s not the same as it was before. Later, they head into the Capitol and manage to take victory although many lives are lost such as Katniss’s dear little sister Prim and Finnick.
This book is in my opinion a four and a half out of five star book with great themes and interesting messages. There are a few things I would like to talk about concerning this book including my favourite and least favourite book and why as well as some characters I love.
My favourite book of the trilogy is the first followed closely by the second. The first one is such a new thing with the idea of the Hunger Games and the second one is somewhat of the same thing except it has new characters and some new elements which make it still a great read.
My least favourite of the books is Mockingjay. The reason I dislike this book more than the first two is that it can be slow at points. The first two books are fast paced and action packed whereas for a lot of this book, it’s slower and it takes more time to get to the next action sequence. I still do like this book.
My favourite characters are, Finnick, Johanna and Rue. I have a lot of characters I adore but for right now I’ll focus on these three characters.
Rue is very sweet and I feel like in the first book she brings out some of the best in Katniss. Katniss is not a sociable kind of person and can sometimes be rude but with Rue she is sweet and motherly and just great, the same way she is with Prim. Rue is strong and capable of staying alive fairly well and she also goes under the radar. Even with that, she would never have been able to win the Hunger Games, she wouldn’t have been able to kill these other teenagers, and twelve year olds shouldn’t be killing, neither should anyone.
Finnick is funny and overall pretty great. He’s caring and sweet but he can also be a deadly killer. He is so loving with Annie and he’s also really friendly and sociable with the others. I really like him because he’s charming and sociable. Finnick, along with Johanna, was the one who made me like Catching Fire even more.
Johanna is sassy and smart and brave. She is fully capable of keeping herself alive and doing all the things that male roles often have to do in books. She is funny and although she has a very tough personality she is still a great friend for Katniss who also has a tough sort of personality as well. As I mentioned earlier, she is one of the elements of the story that made me like Catching Fire even more. A new character who is great is such a plus to a story.
Thanks for reading this, I hope you have enjoyed and will join me for this (hopefully) weekly occurrence.
